European Research Institute (ERI)

With 28 sites across Europe and 2,000 researchers, Huawei’s European Research Institute (ERI) is at the forefront of both fundamental and applied technology research. Our ERI coordinates academic research collaborations and strategic technical planning among our network of European R&D facilities. The Zurich Research Centre (ZRC), located in Zurich, Switzerland, is a key component of the ERI, focusing on pioneering research in composable-native computing infrastructure that integrates scale-up and scale-out fabrics.

The laboratory at ZRC promotes collaborative research, engaging both Huawei's internal researchers and academic partners from prestigious universities across Europe. This “open research environment” facilitates fundamental, long-term investigations that benefit from the innovative atmosphere reminiscent of top-tier universities and research institutes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct cutting-edge research to develop the first generation of composable-native computer systems, ensuring maximum elasticity and independent scaling of compute, memory, and I/O while integrating applications, parallel programming, and computer architecture.
  • Develop and prototype new architectural features and improvements.
  • Produce and present research papers at leading conferences, as well as author white papers on current developments and future research directions.
  • Establish and maintain research partnerships with prominent universities and educators.
  • Mentor junior researchers and interns.

Requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in Computer Interconnects, Computer Architecture, and High-Performance Computing (HPC).
  • Proven track record of publishing research papers in leading conferences or journals.
  • Creativity and the ability to innovate and think outside the box.
  • Research experience and/or strong knowledge in several of the following areas:
    • Parallel programming models such as MPI, OpenSHEM, or Collectives.
    • Network stack, architecture, and systems in data centers such as RoCE, Ultra-Ethernet, or supercomputer clusters including Infiniband, Slingshot, or Gemini/Aries.
    • Scale-up fabrics including PCIe, CXL, NVLink, UPI, or IF.
    • RPC protocols and stacks such as gRPC or Thrift.
    • Knowledge of Deep Learning, Recommenders, and Generative AI, hardware-software co-design, or cloud computing is a plus.
  • Excellent intercultural communication, coordination, presentation, and reporting skills, enabling effective collaboration in a research environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to work independently.
