The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich invites experienced scientists specializing in manufacturing to join our esteemed institution. The initial appointment will be at the scientific collaborator level (non-permanent), with the opportunity for promotion to senior scientist (permanent) and the awarding of an Adjunct Professor title in accordance with ETH's established rules.

Position Overview

Successful candidates are expected to lead a world-class research and teaching program that emphasizes industrial translation in the field of manufacturing. We are looking for outstanding scientists with demonstrated expertise in:

  • Subtractive manufacturing (cutting, milling, grinding, electro discharge machining)
  • Production machines and machine tools

Utilizing their knowledge, candidates will address industry-relevant research challenges, including:

  • Controlling high-precision production machines
  • Optimizing machine tools
  • Conceiving sustainable manufacturing processes

Key Responsibilities

This position is intended to be part of ETH’s Center for Manufacturing, which is set to be established in the coming months. The selected candidate will:

  • Support the development and execution of educational and mentoring activities
  • Supervise doctoral students in the areas of subtractive manufacturing and machine tools
  • Assist in the acquisition and coordination of industry-focused projects, engaging many ETH students and researchers

Moreover, the role opens up collaboration opportunities with inspire AG, ETH’s strategic partner for technology transfer to the mechanical, electrical, and metal (MEM) industries.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a PhD degree in engineering along with an exceptional record of accomplishments in academic and/or industrial research related to the aforementioned areas. A strong motivation for teaching, particularly in project-based courses that emphasize hands-on learning experiences, is essential. At the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (MAVT), undergraduate courses are taught in German or English, while graduate-level courses are conducted in English. Your profile should complement the research and teaching missions of the Institute for Machine Tools and Manufacturing (IWF) and the Institute for Virtual Manufacturing (IVP).
