Summary

Join our Diseases of Ageing and Regenerative Medicine (DARe) department at Biomedical Research as a Senior Principal Scientist. In this role, you will spearhead in-vivo imaging initiatives, pioneering innovative imaging techniques and technologies to advance Drug Discovery across key research areas, including Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, and Cardiovascular and Metabolic diseases.

About the Role

The successful candidate will lead the in-vivo imaging facility to enhance the drug discovery process through advanced imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, computerized tomography, and optical imaging. You will assess pharmacological interventions in relevant small rodent disease models and identify and characterize imaging biomarkers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the in-vivo imaging facility, including line management of laboratory associates and coordination of activities and technical development.
  • Maintain equipment infrastructure while leading the enhancement of techniques to address biological questions related to the projects, including MRI, ultrasound, micro-CT, and optical imaging.
  • Develop and program imaging and spectroscopy protocols relevant to preclinical pharmacological studies.
  • Interpret, analyze, and report data derived from these techniques, presenting results effectively in both written and oral formats at team meetings and to management decision boards.
  • Design, execute, analyze, and report state-of-the-art in-vivo animal experiments involving imaging/spectroscopy.
  • Integrate in-vivo imaging results with ex-vivo tissue and biofluid analyses.
  • Collaborate with project team members across the organization and animal facilities to ensure timely execution of complex in vivo studies.
  • Support the characterization of translational imaging biomarker candidates in collaboration with the clinical imaging group at Novartis.

Minimum Requirements - What You Will Bring to the Role

  • A scientific background in a relevant discipline (Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or Life Science) with a PhD and Postdoctoral research, along with 2-3 years of industry experience or equivalent academic experience, including extensive in-vivo experimentation and imaging research.
  • Relevant experience in in-vivo imaging of small rodents documented through publications.
  • Laboratory experience in in-vivo MR techniques, providing both technical expertise and a biological background to guide in-vivo experimentation.
  • Prior management experience leading an in-vivo imaging laboratory in either an academic or industrial setting.
  • A motivation to deepen your understanding of diseases of aging and regenerative medicine.
  • A proactive attitude coupled with an inquisitive mindset and a proven ability to formulate, articulate, and critically evaluate scientific experiments.
  • Excellent teamwork skills and an aptitude for collaborating within cross-disciplinary teams.
  • High adaptability to learning new techniques and a commitment to staying updated on the latest developments in animal research.
  • Fluency in written and oral English, complemented by exceptional presentation skills.

Technical Skills

  • Experience with in-vivo anatomical (MRI, CT, ultrasound) and molecular imaging techniques (e.g., PET, optical) as well as in-vivo spectroscopy (e.g., 31P MRS).
  • Programming skills in the Bruker environment and image analysis (e.g., Matlab).
  • Proficiency in data analysis, hypothesis testing, and problem-solving.
  • Accreditation for animal experimentation (LTK1/LTK2, FELASA B, or equivalent).
