Principal Researcher – Generative AI

Microsoft Research (MSR) AI Frontiers lab is looking for a talented Principal Researcher in Generative AI to join our dynamic team in Zurich, Switzerland. Our mission is to push the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, efficiency, and safety through innovative advancements in foundation models and learning agent platforms.

We are involved in groundbreaking projects such as Small Language Models (e.g., Phi, Orca) and agentic AI systems (e.g., AutoGen, MagenticOne, OmniParser). In this role, you will lead efforts focused on advancing Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) technologies. As a Senior Principal Researcher, your contribution will be vital in developing, enhancing, and exploring the potential of Generative AI models, with a direct impact on the creation of cutting-edge technologies that solve real-world challenges.

Research Areas

Our ongoing research encompasses, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Reasoning and inference-time compute strategies
  • Action models for automating web and computer tasks
  • Evaluation and understanding of model and agent capabilities

Responsibilities

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in collaboration with fellow researchers, engineers, and product teams.
  • Contribute to significant research breakthroughs in the field while having the opportunity to translate your ideas into products and services used globally.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Computer Science or a related field, coupled with several years of relevant research experience or equivalent qualifications.
  • A robust research program as evidenced by public artifacts such as AI models, tools, and code, or publications in premier conferences including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, NAACL, CVPR, COLT, ECCV, ICCV, and EMNLP.
  • Proven experience in building and evaluating frontier models.
  • A track record of publishing academic papers as a lead author or significant contributor within the field of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Demonstrated participation in top conferences relevant to your research domain.
  • Ability to define an ambitious, original research agenda effectively.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to technically lead interdisciplinary teams.
  • A genuine interest in real-world applications and their impact.
