Microsoft Research (MSR) AI Frontiers lab is seeking a talented individual to join their team in Zurich, Switzerland, for the position of Principal Researcher in Generative AI.

About the AI Frontiers Lab

The mission of the AI Frontiers lab is to push the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, efficiency, and safety through innovative advancements in foundation models and learning agent platforms. Our projects include initiatives working with Small Language Models (e.g., Phi, Orca) and agent-based AI systems (e.g., AutoGen, MagenticOne, OmniParser).

Your Role

As a Sr. Principal Researcher – Generative AI, you will play a vital role in leading, developing, improving, and exploring the capabilities of Generative AI models. Your work will significantly influence the development of cutting-edge technologies, advance the state-of-the-art, and provide practical solutions to real-world challenges.

Research Areas

Our ongoing research encompasses, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Reasoning and inference-time compute strategies
  • Action models for automating web and computer tasks
  • Evaluation and understanding of model and agent capabilities

Responsibilities

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in collaboration with a team of researchers, engineers, and product groups.
  • Contribute to research breakthroughs and have the opportunity to realize your ideas in products and services used globally.

Qualifications

  • A Doctorate in Computer Science or a relevant field, along with several years of related research experience or equivalent expertise.
  • A research portfolio showcased through public artifacts such as models, tools, code in the AI domain, or publications in prestigious conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, NAACL, CVPR, COLT, ECCV, ICCV, EMNLP.
  • Experience in building and evaluating frontier models.
  • Proven track record of publishing academic papers as a lead author or as a key contributor in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Participation in top conferences within the relevant research domain.
  • Demonstrable ability to define an ambitious and original research agenda.
  • Strong collaboration skills, effective communication, and the ability to technically lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • A keen interest in real-world applications and impact.
