Summary

We are seeking a dedicated professional to manage complex intellectual property (IP) administrative, filing, and legal support tasks. In this role, you will be an integral part of a high-performing team, providing comprehensive IP administrative support for patent practitioners engaged in regional, international, and foreign filings.

Your responsibilities will include maintaining an accurate docket using a patent docketing system and applying your expertise in IP law and practice. You will undertake operational and strategic responsibilities to enhance paralegal support, mentor fellow team members in European Patents (EP) and foreign patent matters, and lead initiatives aimed at process improvement within the Patent Support team.

About the Role

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Filing EP, international, and foreign patent applications along with related correspondence from submission to issuance of grant.
  • Handling EP and international patent filings, including patent nationalizations and other foreign filings.
  • Preparing all necessary documentation for EP, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and foreign applications; initiating preparation of responses to official communications.
  • Maintaining and sharing knowledge of the latest patent regulations and adapting practices accordingly.
  • Monitoring and updating electronic dockets for responsible attorneys and managing assigned paralegal tasks daily.
  • Proactively ensuring that all assigned cases meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Conducting independent reviews and maintaining assistance with the workload of responsible attorneys.
  • Coordinating outsourcing and file transfers in a timely manner to minimize the risk of lost rights.
  • Effectively communicating with colleagues, inventors, foreign agents, and associates.
  • Participating in patent group and cross-divisional meetings as necessary.
  • Providing flexibility in support across various areas within the Patent Support team as required.
  • Addressing global prosecution and operational issues impacting the department through project work.
  • Leading teams to develop procedures and enhance existing processes.
  • Conducting meetings as needed to facilitate cooperation and improvement.
  • Identifying areas for efficiency enhancement within current procedures.

What You'll Bring to the Role

  • A relevant degree in Law or Paralegal studies, or equivalent IP certification or experience.
  • Proficiency in English (both spoken and written); additional languages are an asset.
  • Demonstrable experience as a patent paralegal in a law firm or corporation with international and foreign filing experience.
  • A strong ability to navigate a complex work environment while managing high-quality outputs.
  • Advanced knowledge of patent databases and the capability to generate reports.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in an electronic office environment.
  • Exemplary research and critical thinking skills with a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience in liaising with cross-divisional teams to ensure effective knowledge sharing.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a commitment to mentoring and developing the competencies of other paralegals.
  • A passion for championing the Patent Support team within the organization.
