The ETH Library is dedicated to promoting knowledge, supporting research and teaching, and making the complexities of the past, present, and future comprehensible. Our Research Analytics Service group, part of the Research Support Services and Acquisitions section, is seeking a Senior Data Scientist, with the position starting on June 1, 2026.
About the Role
As a valued member of the Research Analytics Service group, you will:
- Conduct and provide scientometric analyses and consulting for researchers, departments, and the executive board of ETH Zurich, communicating results in a clear and decision-relevant manner.
- Proactively clarify project requirements and take ownership from joint planning to delivery, including documentation and handover, collaborating closely with other ETH Zurich units and beyond.
- Enhance our services by designing, improving, and maintaining reproducible workflows in partnership with various ETH Zurich units.
- Contribute to the continuous development of innovative, data-driven approaches and projects within the context of open data and scientometrics.
Background
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Master’s degree in information science, library science, data science, computer science, or a related field; a PhD is an advantage.
- Information science or library science competencies, regardless of academic background.
- Research experience or in-depth knowledge of science communication is a valuable asset.
Technical & Analytical Skills
- Strong programming skills (preferably in Python) with a commitment to producing clear, reproducible, well-structured code.
- Working knowledge of SQL and/or NoSQL databases, along with a motivation to enhance your expertise.
- Excellent analytical thinking skills with a structured and quality-focused approach to data and methods.
- Experience in data engineering, building data-driven applications, computational linguistics, machine learning/AI, dashboarding, dataset management, open-source contributions, digital humanities, or data management systems is preferred.
Scientometrics & Research Evaluation Interests
- Experience with scientometric/bibliometric analyses or a strong motivation to advance in research assessment methods.
- An interest in scholarly communication, open science/open data, and the Swiss research landscape.
Project Delivery & Service Mindset
- Proven ability to proactively drive projects by clarifying needs, structuring work, managing priorities, and achieving results.
- A strong service orientation, with a passion for enabling others and translating questions into actionable analyses.
- A clear communicator capable of explaining methods, limitations, and insights effectively to diverse audiences, both in writing and discussions.
Languages
- Fluency in both English and German (written and spoken) is required.
