Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC)

The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is a National Research Infrastructure, jointly founded by EPFL and ETH Zurich, and is part of the ETH Domain. Its mission is to support academic labs, hospitals, industry, and public sector stakeholders—including cantonal and federal administrations—throughout their data science journey. This journey encompasses everything from data collection and management to machine learning, artificial intelligence, and industrialization. SDSC boasts a large multidisciplinary team of professionals across three locations (Lausanne, Zurich, Villigen) and provides expertise and services across various domains, including health and biomedical sciences, energy and sustainability, climate and environment, and large-scale scientific infrastructures.

Position: Senior Data Scientist

We are currently seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our Research team. This team is responsible for research collaborations in both the academic and public sectors. As a Senior Data Scientist at SDSC, you will leverage your expertise in machine learning, statistical data science, computer vision, natural language processing, and signal processing. You will work closely with researchers, experts, and other collaborators from academia and the public sector throughout Switzerland, addressing various fields such as health and biomedical sciences, climate and environment, energy and sustainability, physical and engineering sciences, and digital society.

Your role will involve helping collaborators identify how to analyze and model their data to answer specific scientific questions and develop algorithms that automate complex tasks. This includes:

  • Actively engaging with collaborators and domain experts to understand project requirements.
  • Translating project needs into data science terms.
  • Determining effective approaches and formulations to meet project goals.
  • Implementing corresponding algorithms and collaborating on evaluations with domain experts.
  • Releasing open-source code and documentation, writing research papers or technical reports, and contributing to the communication of results.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engaging in data science projects with academic and public sector collaborators.
  • Advising MSc students as needed.
  • Evaluating project proposals.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Holds a PhD in machine learning, statistics, computer vision, natural language processing, signal processing, or optimization.
  • Possesses practical experience in employing machine learning models in real-world applications.
  • Has experience in interdisciplinary collaborations, which is highly desirable.
  • Is proficient in Python and PyTorch, with familiarity concerning state-of-the-art models and architectures.

What We Offer

A stimulating, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary environment within a world-class research institution, where you'll be part of a team of 40 data scientists from over 15 different countries. Together, we work to apply and develop innovative ML methods to address real-world challenges.

We value work-life balance and provide opportunities to publish research collaboratively with experts across various fields in top-rated journals and conferences. You will also have the chance to supervise student projects. We promote experimentation and creativity by encouraging the learning of new technologies and methodologies in the workplace. Your input will always be valued.
