With a large multidisciplinary team of professionals located across Lausanne, Zurich, and Villigen, the SDSC provides expertise and services across several domains, including health and biomedical sciences, energy and sustainability, climate and environment, and large-scale scientific infrastructures.

Job Opportunity: Senior Data Scientist

We are currently seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join the Research team at the SDSC. This team is responsible for fostering research collaborations within the academic and public sectors.

As a Senior Data Scientist in our Research team, you will leverage your expertise in machine learning, statistical data science, computer vision, natural language processing, and signal processing to collaborate closely with researchers, experts, and other stakeholders from academia and the public sector in Switzerland. You will work across various fields such as health and biomedical sciences, climate and environment, energy and sustainability, physical and engineering sciences, and digital society. Your role will involve assisting these stakeholders in effectively analyzing or modeling their data to answer specific scientific questions or developing algorithms for complex tasks.

This position entails active engagement with collaborators and domain experts to understand project requirements, translating them into data science terms and identifying the most effective approaches to achieve project goals. You will implement corresponding algorithms, evaluate outcomes in collaboration with domain experts, release open-source code with accompanying documentation, write research papers or technical reports as appropriate, and contribute to the communication of results.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on data science projects with partners from academia and the public sector.
  • Advise MSc students.
  • Evaluate project proposals.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Holds a PhD in machine learning, statistics, computer vision, natural language processing, signal processing, or optimization.
  • Possesses practical experience in applying machine learning models to real-world applications.
  • Has experience with interdisciplinary collaborations and a proven track record of real-world applications.
  • Is proficient in Python and PyTorch, and is familiar with state-of-the-art models and architectures.

Working Environment

You will enjoy a stimulating, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary environment in a world-class research institution, joining a team of 40 data scientists from more than 15 different countries, all dedicated to applying and developing novel ML methods to solve real-world problems. We value work-life balance and support your ability to publish research in collaboration with experts in top-ranked journals and conferences.

You will also have the opportunity to supervise student projects and foster experimentation and creativity by actively promoting the learning of new technologies and approaches in your work. Your insights and opinions will always be valued.
