About the Basel Institute on Governance
The Basel Institute on Governance is a hands-on center of competence dedicated to promoting good governance and countering corruption for a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world. Established in 2003 in Basel, Switzerland, the Institute collaborates with partners worldwide to advance knowledge, practice, and policy regarding anti-corruption, asset recovery, and business integrity. With field operations across the globe, it employs around 150 staff members representing 32 nationalities. The Basel Institute is also an Associated Institute of the University of Basel.
Job Description
The Senior Specialist, Compliance will provide anti-corruption compliance advisory expertise related to the advisory services offered by the Basel Institute to the private sector, state-owned enterprises, multilateral organizations, and government authorities globally. This position reports to the Director of the Private Sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver compliance service mandates, which are typically time-specific projects financed by multilateral development banks, investors, or private sector companies. These projects focus on developing and implementing anti-corruption compliance programs or enhancing existing ones, and often include conducting risk assessments, analyzing third-party due diligence practices, drafting policies and training materials, and benchmarking standards against international practices.
- Support the development of project proposals related to compliance mandates.
- Contribute to the development of the Basel Institute’s knowledge products on business integrity.
- Participate in, and where appropriate, lead the periodic review, enhancement, and effective implementation of the Basel Institute’s internal compliance program and related trainings, in coordination with relevant internal stakeholders.
- Expand the Basel Institute’s network and contribute to development efforts in the field of business integrity.
Qualifications and Skills
- University degree in law, combined with at least 10 years of relevant professional experience in compliance, preferably in-house or as a consultant.
- Proven experience in managing or implementing a corporate anti-corruption compliance program, including internal investigations.
- International experience in the private sector.
- Familiarity with industry practices, particularly in energy, infrastructure, or pharmaceuticals is a clear advantage.
- Excellent understanding of international standards and trends on compliance.
- Proactive, self-driven professional with the ability to articulate thought leadership in business integrity and compliance, and to actively contribute to the development, positioning, and uptake of the Institute’s compliance services.
- Excellent time management, organizational, and planning skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.
- Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to independently follow up on assigned tasks.
- Availability for international travel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in other (preferably UN official) languages is a plus.
