Summary

The Senior Clinical Development Medical Director (CDMD) is responsible for leading the strategic planning and management of assigned clinical program(s) from an end-to-end clinical development perspective. As the Senior CDMD in the Renal Therapeutic Area, you will oversee the clinical development of these programs and drive the execution of the clinical development plan. You will foster an empowered organization capable of navigating a matrix environment and adapting swiftly to business needs.

About the Role

Major Accountabilities:

  • Provide clinical leadership and strategic medical input for all clinical deliverables in the assigned project or section of a clinical program.
  • Lead the development of clinical sections of trial and program-level regulatory documents.
  • Drive the execution of the assigned clinical program and/or clinical trial in partnership with global line functions, assigned Global Trial Directors (GTDs), and regional/country medical associates, as applicable.
  • Support the Senior Global Program Clinical Head (GPCH) in ensuring the overall safety of the molecule for the assigned section, and serve as a core member of the Safety Management Team (SMT), collaborating with Patient Safety colleagues.
  • Assist the Clinical Development Head (CDH) by providing medical input into Clinical Development Plan (CDP), Integrated Development Plan (IDP), and Clinical Trial Protocol (CTP) reviews, and contribute to the development of disease clinical standards for new disease areas.
  • Act as a medical expert in interactions with external and internal stakeholders and decision boards, supporting the (Sr.) GPCH or CDH.
  • Collaborate with the Novartis Institute of Biomedical Research (NIBR) to transition pre-PoC (Proof of Concept) projects to Development Decision Point (DDP) and work with Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) on target identification and due diligence, as necessary.

Minimum Requirements

  • MD or equivalent medical degree, plus advanced knowledge and clinical training in the medical/scientific area; a minimum of 4 years clinical practice experience (including residency) and board certification or eligibility in the disease area is preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience in clinical research or drug development.
  • Experience in academic clinical research or industry environments involving clinical activities in Phases I through IV; at least 2 years of experience in all aspects of conducting clinical trials (planning, executing, reporting, and publishing) in a global/matrix environment in the pharmaceutical industry is required.
  • Proficient understanding of the disease area, with a proven ability to interpret, discuss, and present efficacy and safety data related to clinical trials, along with a grasp of basic and clinical scientific research reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective scientific partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), clinical trial design, statistics, and regulatory and clinical development processes.
  • Previous global people management experience is preferred, including management in a matrix environment.
