Job Opportunity: Senior Bioinformatics Engineer

IBBIS is on the lookout for a Senior Bioinformatics Engineer to elevate its free open-source DNA synthesis screening tool. This role focuses on optimizing sequence analysis, enhancing pathogen detection, and contributing to global biosecurity standards.

About IBBIS

We are proud to support IBBIS in its initiatives in Geneva under an exclusive mandate. IBBIS is an international organization committed to advancing biosecurity and biosafety. It works to strengthen international, regional, and national norms while developing innovative tools, including the Common Mechanism—an essential system for screening synthetic DNA. In 2025, IBBIS aims to expand synthetic DNA screening, promote international standards, and facilitate responsible research and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Bioinformatics Engineer will be instrumental in optimizing and expanding the Common Mechanism, IBBIS’s open-source sequence screening tool. With over 1 million sequences validated and resilience demonstrated against AI-redesigned pathogens, IBBIS is seeking to fortify its team to establish this tool as a global standard for synthesis screening.

  • Enhance homology search performance.
  • Improve pathogen detection capabilities.
  • Address vulnerability disclosures.
  • Contribute to the development of international biosecurity standards.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for a technically adept candidate with strong security judgment. Candidates may have experience in pathogen detection, high-performance computing, or scientific software development. While specific biosecurity expertise is beneficial, we highly value the ability to construct robust bioinformatics pipelines and execute strategic technical decisions.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years in bioinformatics or computational biology.
  • Experience in the classification and detection of pathogen sequences, utilizing standard sequence analysis tools (e.g., BLAST, DIAMOND, HMMER).
  • Strong Python programming skills for developing bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Proven leadership qualities and effective team collaboration.
  • Availability during core hours (15:00-17:00 UTC).

What We Offer

  • Flexible Work Environment: The opportunity to work remotely or from the office in Geneva.
  • Global Impact: An opportunity to contribute to biosecurity tool development and influence global biotechnology standards.
  • Professional Growth: Collaborate with an expert team and gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies in bioinformatics and AI.
  • International Collaboration: Work alongside global experts on international projects shaping the future of biotechnology and biosecurity.
  • Core Team Role: Be a crucial member of the technical team, taking a leadership role in developing synthesis screening methodologies.
