The Oncology Data Science team at Novartis Biomedical Research (NBR) offers exceptional computational biology, AI, and data engineering expertise within the Oncology Disease Area. We are dedicated to providing innovative therapeutics across various drug modalities. Our mission is to leverage the transformative power of data and AI to expedite the development of groundbreaking medicines for oncology patients globally.

We are looking for a passionate AI/ML scientist who is eager to explore pre-clinical and clinical drug development, helping to accelerate our pioneering oncology drug discovery programs. Joining the Oncology Data Science team at NBR Oncology will place you in a collaborative environment filled with supportive and enthusiastic colleagues, all working towards making your AI models create a tangible real-world impact.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, implement, and apply advanced machine learning algorithms, AI models, and platforms to derive predictive insights from pre-clinical, clinical, and real-world evidence datasets.
  • Demonstrate the value of innovative AI techniques in drug target identification, biomolecular interaction modeling, drug development, biomarker discovery, treatment response prediction, and clinical trial design.
  • Utilize foundational models, including pre-trained, self-supervised, multi-purpose, and multi-modal models to propel generative AI applications in drug discovery.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish and adopt best practices for ML-ready data.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and showcase results at both internal and external scientific conferences.

Minimum Requirements:

  • MSc or Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Biology, or a related field; PhD preferred.
  • Strong experience in one or more of the following areas: generative AI, agentic AI, biomedical foundation models, geometric deep learning, multi-modal learning, and large-scale knowledge graphs.
  • Excellent programming skills and proficiency in deep learning frameworks (PyTorch), with a willingness to learn new tools and technologies.
  • Hands-on experience across the ML and Large Language Models (LLMs) software stack, including feature engineering, model development, deployment, and validation.
  • Outstanding communication skills, capable of conveying complex data insights and recommendations to cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong research capabilities demonstrated by publications in leading machine learning or artificial intelligence conferences and top-tier scientific journals.

Nice to Have:

  • Prior experience working with omics data and familiarity with oncology drug development is preferred.
