Scientist, Mouse Genetics and Outsourced Breeding Management

Roche Switzerland bridges the gap between pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, hosting vital research and development functions. We are currently seeking a Scientist, Mouse Genetics and Outsourced Breeding Management for our long-term client, F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG in Basel.

Background:

The ideal candidate will possess the technical expertise necessary to generate and validate sophisticated transgenic models. This role is dedicated to advocating for the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, Refinement—while optimizing breeding colonies to ensure genetic stability and animal welfare. The individual will seamlessly connect complex vivarium operations with therapeutic innovation, transforming genetic blueprints into reliable, well-characterized experimental cohorts.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-level oversight of external Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and internal breeding facilities to ensure operational excellence.
  • Develop and implement optimized breeding strategies focusing on quality, timelines, and costs to maintain genetic stability while minimizing surplus animals.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external vivarium managers, troubleshooting issues related to phenotype drift or health status.
  • Act as the internal expert for generating new mouse lines using cutting-edge techniques.
  • Define and standardize the official nomenclature for all newly generated lines in accordance with MGI (Mouse Genome Informatics) and International Committee guidelines.
  • Maintain meticulous records of genotypes and molecular validation data (e.g., NGS, Southern Blot, qPCR).
  • Monitor the health and welfare of experimental cohorts, defining humane endpoints and overseeing the assessment of unexpected phenotypes in new transgenic lines.
  • Develop and implement standards for housing and care of contract-bred animals at external partners.
  • Collaborate with therapeutic area experts to provide initial phenotypic characterization and validation of model utility.

Must Haves:

  • PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of hands-on experience in mouse genetics and colony management.
  • Proven track record of generating mouse models.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple external vendor relationships.
  • Familiarity with FELASA guidelines and animal welfare legislation.
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in German is a plus.

What You Will Be Offered:

  • An opportunity to work with one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies.
  • A modern campus with plenty of green spaces and meeting areas.
  • A central location in Basel.
  • A varied job profile with opportunities for professional growth.
  • Further training opportunities through temptraining.
