Scientist in AAV Synthetic Biology & Gene Therapy / Scientistess in AAV Synthetic Biology & Gene Therapy

ETH Zürich - June 8, 2025

Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering

The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich in Basel is seeking scientists eager to make a difference. If you thrive on innovation and want to be part of something new and exciting, we would love to hear from you! Our team is on the lookout for talented individuals to join us in launching a new venture focused on cutting-edge research in scalable recombinant Adeno-associated virus (rAAV) manufacturing and closed-loop gene therapies for inborn metabolic disorders.

About D-BSSE

The D-BSSE is a remarkable institution where diverse fields of study converge harmoniously. This unique department, the first of its kind at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, encourages progress in Systems Biology, Biotechnology, and Synthetic Biology. Here, researchers from theoretical and experimental biology, as well as engineering, collaborate to share their passion and expertise for a better world. Situated in beautiful Basel, Switzerland, D-BSSE lies in the heart of the Biovalley—an innovative tri-national region that hosts 40% of the global life science industry, making it a prime location for high-impact translational research.

Our Research Focus

Our group employs state-of-the-art Synthetic Biology principles to engineer human cells and develop advanced gene and cell therapies targeting various conditions, including cancer, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune issues, and infectious diseases. For more information, please visit our webpage and published work.

Exciting Projects Ahead

We are embarking on an exciting project aimed at transforming synthetic biology tools into innovative new AAV-based therapies. Our goals include enhancing safety, efficacy, and scalability of production for these therapies. We are dedicated to overcoming challenges in the gene therapy field, particularly in producing significant quantities of AAV vectors and creating adaptable gene therapies that maintain optimal therapeutic protein levels. You will play a crucial role in developing, validating, and integrating these technologies, contributing to our roadmap towards clinical translation.

Who We Are Looking For

We are searching for exceptional scientists passionate about converting startup technologies into commercial realities. If you are a creative and highly motivated scientist thriving in a dynamic scientific environment, and are excited about the opportunity to develop and implement cutting-edge technologies, we encourage you to consider joining our team. Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A PhD in synthetic biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, or a related field.
  • A proven track record and publication record in academia or industry.
  • Experience with mammalian cell engineering, AAV vector design, production and purification, synthetic gene circuits, inducible expression systems, high-throughput screening, advanced molecular cloning, and in vivo preclinical models.
  • A strong entrepreneurial mindset.
