The D-BSSE is a unique place where various fields of study harmoniously intersect. As the first of its kind at ETH Zurich, its mission is to propel advancements in Systems Biology, Biotechnology, and Synthetic Biology. Here, teams engaged in theoretical biology, experimental biology, and engineering collaborate, sharing their passion and expertise to improve the world. Located in beautiful Basel, Switzerland, the D-BSSE is situated in the heart of the Biovalley, a tri-national region that hosts 40% of the global life science industry, including several prominent pharmaceutical companies, making it an ideal environment for high-impact translational research.
Our group utilizes state-of-the-art Synthetic Biology principles to engineer human cells and develop advanced gene and cell therapies targeting various diseases, including cancer, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune conditions, and infectious diseases. We are embarking on an exciting project aimed at transforming synthetic biology tools into innovative AAV-based therapies. Our goal is to enhance their safety and effectiveness while streamlining the production process for large quantities. We aim to address critical challenges in the gene therapy field, including the mass production of AAV vectors and the development of therapies that can dynamically respond to disease signs, maintaining optimal levels of therapeutic proteins. You will be involved in developing, validating, and integrating these technologies, contributing to the roadmap towards clinical translation.
