The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich in Basel is seeking scientists eager to make a significant impact. We are looking for talented individuals to help launch a new venture focused on cutting-edge research in scalable recombinant Adeno-associated virus (rAAV) manufacturing and closed-loop gene therapies for inborn metabolic disorders.

The D-BSSE is a unique place where various fields of study harmoniously intersect. As the first of its kind at ETH Zurich, its mission is to propel advancements in Systems Biology, Biotechnology, and Synthetic Biology. Here, teams engaged in theoretical biology, experimental biology, and engineering collaborate, sharing their passion and expertise to improve the world. Located in beautiful Basel, Switzerland, the D-BSSE is situated in the heart of the Biovalley, a tri-national region that hosts 40% of the global life science industry, including several prominent pharmaceutical companies, making it an ideal environment for high-impact translational research.

Project Background

Our group utilizes state-of-the-art Synthetic Biology principles to engineer human cells and develop advanced gene and cell therapies targeting various diseases, including cancer, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune conditions, and infectious diseases. Job Description

We are embarking on an exciting project aimed at transforming synthetic biology tools into innovative AAV-based therapies. Our goal is to enhance their safety and effectiveness while streamlining the production process for large quantities. We aim to address critical challenges in the gene therapy field, including the mass production of AAV vectors and the development of therapies that can dynamically respond to disease signs, maintaining optimal levels of therapeutic proteins. You will be involved in developing, validating, and integrating these technologies, contributing to the roadmap towards clinical translation.

Profile

We are seeking outstanding scientists who are passionate about commercializing startup technologies. You are a creative and highly motivated individual who thrives in a dynamic scientific environment. You are excited about the opportunity to innovate and implement cutting-edge technologies. Additionally, you possess:

  • A PhD in synthetic biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, or a related field
  • A proven track and publication record in academia or industry
  • Experience in mammalian cell engineering, AAV vector design, production and purification, synthetic gene circuits and inducible expression systems, high-throughput screening, advanced molecular cloning, and in vivo preclinical models
  • A strong entrepreneurial mindset
  • A collaborative, motivated, and ambitious attitude
