ETH Zurich - July 16, 2026

Scientific Assistant in Antenna Array Design and Testing

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Integrated Devices, Electronics, and Systems (IDEAS) Group is a world-leading research group focused on next-generation wireless technologies for applications such as 6G, satellite communication (SATCOM), and electromagnetic sensing. Our research is backed by multiple EU, ESA, and Swiss programs, significantly contributing to European digital sovereignty.

Antennas are crucial components in all wireless systems, functioning as transducers that bridge circuits and wave propagation. They convert signals between electronic and electromagnetic domains. Advanced wireless systems often rely on array-based operations, such as phased arrays or MIMO arrays, where thousands of antennas synchronize with hundreds of integrated circuit (IC) chips, presenting numerous design challenges. Testing these high-performance antennas and arrays involves expertise in automated test setups and high-end electronic measurement facilities.

We are seeking a research assistant to join our IDEAS team, contributing to the design, implementation, and testing of various high-performance antennas and antenna arrays. The anticipated start date is Monday, 17 August 2026.

Project Background

Next-generation wireless communication and sensing systems depend heavily on the co-designs and collaborations between electronics and antenna arrays. These complex systems present challenges not only in the design of antenna arrays but also in their operations and performance, such as array system calibration, beam management, and null steering.

The IDEAS Group is involved in multiple ongoing wireless projects focusing on 6G, satellite communication (SATCOM), and electromagnetic sensing/imaging applications. We have developed and experimentally verified several antenna and antenna array solutions for these systems. While these existing technologies provide a valuable foundation, new antenna designs are essential to address emerging challenges.

This position is aimed at candidates who can design, implement, and refine high-performance antennas and antenna arrays for integration into cutting-edge wireless systems. The successful candidate will support real-world applications and contribute to the advancement of next-generation communication, computation, and sensing systems, including developing antenna and antenna array PCB boards, packaging wireless IC chips with antenna boards, setting up measurement environments, and conducting automated testing of antenna arrays.

Job Description

  • Design, implement, and refine antenna and antenna array designs in commercial PCB technologies.
  • Develop and refine antenna array PCB boards for operational integration with wireless ICs, including RF signal feeding/combining/dividing traces, DC supply/biasing/ground lines, and digital programming lines in the designs.
  • Create test control PCBs for antenna array PCBs.
  • Establish measurement environments and support automated testing of antenna arrays with wireless ICs.
  • Lead the execution and analysis of antenna and antenna array test campaigns to validate performance under various operating conditions.
  • Document and investigate test anomalies.
  • Prepare formal test reports for internal reviews and project deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain automated test frameworks to enhance repeatability, traceability, and testing efficiency.

Profile

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Microelectronics, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in applied electromagnetics and antenna designs.
  • Experience in printed circuit board (PCB) design.
  • Knowledge of microwave engineering and advanced electromagnetics is a plus.
  • Electronics testing experience using Keysight and R&S equipment is a plus.
  • Previous experience in fast-paced research environments.
  • Highly organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Motivated to contribute to a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment, with a strong commitment to technical excellence.
  • Exhibits high professional integrity, maturity, and a constructive working style.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, the working language of the IDEAS team.

Workplace

The selected candidate will work in a stimulating environment at the IDEAS Lab, part of a leading multidisciplinary electronics research team at ETH Zurich.

What We Offer

  • A 1-year contract at the IDEAS Lab, with an 80-100% workload; renewal is possible based on performance and funding availability.
  • A collaborative environment within a world-leading electronics research team at ETH Zurich.
  • The opportunity to support cutting-edge research projects in next-generation communication and sensing technologies.
  • Hands-on experience in advanced antenna and array design, development, integration, and testing.
  • Membership in a motivated, supportive, and collaborative team.
  • The chance to learn from experienced researchers and technical experts while contributing to impactful research projects that enhance European digital sovereignty.
