Job Opportunity: Scientific Assistant

The Chair of Landscape Architecture and Geohistorical Practice, led by Assistant Professor Aisling O’Carroll, at the Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich, is seeking a highly motivated scientific assistant to support the research and teaching activities of the Chair. This fixed-term position spans nine months, ending in February 2027, with the possibility of extension.

About the Chair

The Chair focuses on interdisciplinary design, history, and theory research within the Master of Science in Landscape Architecture (MScLA) program. We employ geohistorical practices to integrate tools from both the natural sciences and humanities, developing proposals that engage diverse stakeholders and address pressing climate challenges. Our research bridges landscape architectural design with comprehensive explorations of history and theory, utilizing methodologies that combine digital sensing, drawing and modeling, archival research, and adaptive design practices for landscapes affected by climate change.

Teaching Responsibilities

A primary teaching responsibility includes delivering the MScLA second-year advanced design studio, where students create large-scale landscape architectural proposals through directed research and iterative design studies. The studio, which takes place during the autumn semester, integrates fieldwork, historical study, and both digital and analog design methods, challenging students to consider the evolving narratives of landscapes in relation to their past and future.

Position Overview

We are looking for a scientific assistant(s) (40-80%) to support the team through research activities and teaching the MSc Landscape Architecture advanced design studio. Each task—teaching and research—constitutes a 40% role. Candidates may apply for one of the roles or both. Your tasks will include:

Research (40%):

  • Collaborate closely with researchers within the Chair and other groups to develop investigations and disseminate public work.
  • Receive constructive direction for research development while bringing independent ideas and motivation to your work.
  • Conduct original research involving fieldwork, archival studies, and design analysis.
  • Contribute to project management and adhere to timelines.
  • Establish contacts and collaborations with interdisciplinary researchers and public institutions.
  • Participate in collaborative paper writing and publish results in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Develop public-facing exhibitions and installations to showcase research findings.

Teaching (40%):

  • Prepare materials and documents for the design studio.
  • Organize and conduct the design studio effectively.
  • Support students in developing their projects through desk critiques.
  • Evaluate and grade student projects.
  • Deliver short lectures to enhance studio learning.
  • Organize and lead studio field trips.
  • Coordinate with related modules taught by the Chair.

Qualifications

As a teaching assistant at the Chair, you'll need to teach landscape architectural design and research effectively. Your qualifications should include:

  • Experience in research and teaching.
  • A strong curiosity for the natural sciences and interdisciplinary work.
  • Interest in research-driven initiatives that blend conceptual thinking, experimentation, and practical making.
  • Design experience in landscape architecture, particularly with a master’s degree in architecture or landscape architecture.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of German is desirable for research and communication with local collaborators.
  • Experience working in a landscape architecture office is advantageous to guide student project development.

Working Environment

This position offers a collaborative atmosphere that encourages personal and professional growth, all while contributing positively to society. You will engage with an international community of researchers and educators in an intellectually open environment that fosters experimentation and innovation.
