Energy Systems Analysis

The Chair of Energy Systems Analysis (ESA) within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at ETH Zurich is seeking a Scientific Assistant to support a research project focused on seasonal thermal energy storage technologies.

The ESA Chair sits at the intersection of engineering and economics, dedicated to developing and applying energy system models to a variety of energy systems and research questions. Led by Prof. Dr. Russell McKenna, the ESA group emphasizes the optimization and assessment of complex systems and infrastructures, aiming for environmentally and economically efficient design and operations. In collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), the group engages in interdisciplinary research on diverse energy technologies, employing modeling and analysis tools to support decision-makers in addressing complex energy challenges.

Your Role

As a Scientific Assistant, you will support the ESA Chair in this interdisciplinary research project, which encompasses the following tasks:

  • Conducting literature and data reviews on STES technologies and projects
  • Data processing and analysis
  • Carrying out techno-economic and environmental analyses
  • Preparing presentations and project reports in German and English
  • Communicating and collaborating with project partners and stakeholders in both German and English

Depending on your background and experience, there may be opportunities for model-based energy system analysis and contributions to scientific publications. This position is part of an ongoing research project involving several municipalities in the Pfannenstiel region, supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • MSc-level degree (or near completion) in a relevant field, such as energy engineering, economics, or business engineering
  • A strong motivation and interest in the sustainable energy sector
  • An eagerness to engage with local stakeholders at the municipal level
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English (with at least one as a native language)
  • Experience in quantitative analysis, including techno-economic analysis, environmental assessment, or energy system modeling is advantageous
  • Familiarity with seasonal thermal energy storage concepts is a plus

Your Impact

By joining ETH Zurich, you will not only receive support for your professional development but also actively contribute to positive societal changes. You will:

  • Work within a dynamic, diverse, and interdisciplinary research group, supported by excellent research and administrative resources
  • Gain direct experience in applied research, collaborating with diverse local stakeholders
  • Be part of our commitment to creating a sustainable and climate-neutral university
• Enjoy numerous benefits, including public transport season tickets, car sharing options, access to a wide range of sports through ASVZ, childcare services, and attractive pension plans
