Job Description

The Heavy Pool Risk Officer position is an integral part of our risk team, responsible for providing profit and loss (P&L) and position analysis to management and the front office. This role reports directly to the Risk Manager.

Main Responsibilities

  • Analyze, model, and report on market risk for all trading activities.
  • Assess and monitor both physical and financial trades.
  • Conduct daily analyses of mark-to-market valuations, risk positions, basis changes, curves, volatilities, and P&L results.
  • Oversee the daily production and reporting of P&L, positions, and exposures from trading systems, along with P&L attribution.
  • Execute daily checks to ensure trade integrity and completeness between desks and trading systems.
  • Develop and maintain risk reporting and analytics to effectively communicate position, P&L, and market risk to traders and management.
  • Coordinate and review deals and pricing in the trading system by performing deal checks, price validation, curve updates, and data reconciliation.
  • Monitor timely deal capture, internal trading limits, and compliance with risk policies to uphold transaction integrity within the trading system.
  • Provide critical insights into risk reporting processes, quantification, and analysis of commodity exposure and forward price movements.
  • Maintain, enhance, and review risk models; test new risk calculations, evaluate model assumptions, and suggest modeling/valuation improvements.
  • Communicate effectively with front office, operations, trade support, finance, and IT teams regarding inputs and assumptions.
  • Collaborate closely with traders to quantify and elucidate the sources of risk in their portfolios.
  • Contribute to the reporting of trading results and positions to senior management, ensuring monthly translations of trading outcomes into accounting.
  • Prepare various reports and analyses for internal and Management Board publication as required.
  • Work closely with back office, finance, credit, legal & compliance, and business unit control to ensure best practices and operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate with compliance to ensure adherence to all requirements.
  • Identify and communicate operational risks, while defining mitigation measures and priorities.
  • Conduct month-end and year-end reconciliations with finance and external auditors as necessary.
  • Provide backup and support to other desk risk officers when needed.

Profile

  • University degree, preferably in Computing, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, or Finance.
  • A minimum of 4 years' experience in a similar role within the commodity trading sector, preferably at a major trading house, oil major, investment bank, or hedge fund.
  • Curious, proactive, rigorous, and meticulous in approach.
  • Demonstrated business analysis skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of risk management methodologies and valuation models.
  • High knowledge of analytics tools and technologies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Python.
  • Willingness to learn and ability to work independently (for experienced candidates).
  • A strong entrepreneurial spirit, naturally curious, and proactive.
  • Excellent attention to detail; rigorous and meticulous.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • A high degree of accuracy and efficiency under deadlines.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken; proficiency in French is a plus.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of quantitative risk analysis is an advantage.
