The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is a state-of-the-art research and training facility, collaboratively operated by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. Leveraging the latest technologies and expertise in omics research, the FGCZ offers robust research services and project support to the vibrant life science research community in Zurich.

Project Background

This position focuses on the analysis and interpretation of mass spectrometry data in support of researchers at the FGCZ. The team is responsible for processing raw data, high-performance computing, statistical evaluation, interpretation, and integrated analysis. We maintain a diverse portfolio of both commercial and open-source applications and continually work on developing novel data processing and analysis pipelines. A critical aspect of this role includes integrating data into our data management system while ensuring the reproducibility of analyses.

Job Description

• Support the FGCZ proteomics and metabolomics user community by maintaining existing and developing new mass spectrometric data processing and analysis pipelines.
• Utilize expertise in informatics and data science to guarantee the reproducibility of data analyses.
• Perform back-office and user-support tasks to assist our collaborators at ETH and the University of Zurich with data interpretation and bioinformatics projects.

Profile

Required Skills and Experiences:

• Team player capable of collaborating closely with wet-lab scientists to translate their needs into effective analyses.
• Academic degree in relevant fields such as computer science, statistics, or biology.
• A master's degree in a relevant domain; Ph.D. candidates are also encouraged to apply.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems, including command-line interfaces.
• Practical knowledge of at least one programming language (C++, C#, Java, Python) and tools such as Git.
• Responsible and informed use of AI-assisted tools in a scientific context.

Preferred Skills and Experiences:

• Familiarity with the management and analysis of large-scale datasets, particularly omics-related data.
• Background in bioinformatics, ideally in mass spectrometry.
• Experience in imaging, spatial, or cross-omics disciplines.
• Proven track record of writing and maintaining code.
• Experience with R/Bioconductor and client-side web programming.
• Experience with UI/UX design, particularly in developing web-based or desktop interfaces for scientific data visualization.
• Familiarity with virtualization tools, e.g., Docker, Apptainer.
• Experience with resource management software, e.g., Slurm.

Independent working ability, coupled with effective interaction skills among research and technical staff and external research groups, is essential. A strong command of English is required, as this is the primary working language at the center.
