The Scientific Software and Data Management (SSDM) division, part of Scientific IT Services (SIS) within our central IT, develops software and data management solutions for research projects across the ETH domain, creating a stimulating, flexible, and family-friendly working environment in Zurich and Basel.

Project Background

The Scientific Software and Data Management (SSDM) team, integral to ETH's central IT department, is composed of software engineers from various backgrounds dedicated to developing software that supports research projects across a wide array of ETH's academic disciplines, including biology, physics, engineering, economics, architecture, and more. Due to our expanding portfolio of projects, we are seeking a versatile software engineer to lead or contribute to various initiatives.

Job Description

In this role, you will collaborate on a Horizon-funded project, EOSC Data Commons, alongside fellow developers within SIS and partner institutions to construct a framework for discovering, sharing, and executing data and algorithms in a distributed environment. While the primary technology will be Python, familiarity with Scala and Typescript is beneficial.

We are particularly interested in candidates who exhibit flexibility, strong communication skills, and a desire to acquire new competencies.

Profile

Required Skills

  • A degree in computer science, mathematics, science, or engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years of software development experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working with Python
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Linux and Docker
  • Experience in building web-based APIs
  • Familiarity with CI tools such as Docker and Git
  • Good communication skills in English
  • A team player who collaborates well with other developers and customers
  • A strong desire to learn new skills

  • A Master’s or PhD
