Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will be engaged in developing innovative sensing solutions for ABB's next-generation systems and products. We are seeking a dedicated team member with a strong research background and the enthusiasm to transition world-class academic research into practical industrial applications. You will collaborate with a highly motivated and diverse international team of scientists at ABB Research, in an open and innovative work environment that offers numerous opportunities for career growth.

The work model for this role is hybrid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and lead research projects focused on industrial sensing that address the needs of our businesses, including applications such as process automation, process industries, port automation, and maritime transport.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to develop novel, high-value sensing products and solutions from concept definition to experimental verification.
  • Evaluate new technologies and conduct technical surveys; generate impactful project proposals.
  • Disseminate your findings through scientific publications and internal technical reports, and contribute to the generation of intellectual property.
  • Foster collaboration with researchers and engineers across other research centres, ABB business units, and universities.

Qualifications for the Role

  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a strong focus on machine perception and computer vision.
  • Expertise in any of the following fields is an advantage: machine learning, reinforcement learning, sensor fusion, digital signal processing, or time series analysis.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C/C++) and familiar with the Linux environment.
  • Hands-on experience with sensing hardware and software pipelines for cameras, LIDAR, or radar is a plus.
  • A proven record of publications at leading scientific conferences and journals.
  • A collaborative team player with a willingness to learn new industrial applications and work across various technologies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
