Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will be integral to developing sensing solutions for ABB’s next-generation systems and products. We are seeking a team member with a proven research track record and the eagerness to transfer and apply world-class academic research into an industrial setting. You will collaborate within a highly motivated, international team of scientists at ABB Research. The work model for this position is hybrid.

Main Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and lead research projects in industrial sensing that address the needs of our businesses, with applications including process automation, process industries, port automation, and maritime transport.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to develop novel, high-value sensing products and solutions from the concept definition phase to experimental verification.
  • Evaluate new technologies, conduct technical surveys, and generate project proposals with significant business impact.
  • Disseminate results through scientific publications and internal technical reports, contributing to the generation of intellectual property.
  • Engage in collaboration with researchers and engineers from other research centers, ABB business units, and universities.

Qualifications for the Role

  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a strong background in machine perception and computer vision.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following fields is advantageous: machine learning, reinforcement learning, sensor fusion, digital signal processing, or time series analysis.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C/C++) and familiar with the Linux ecosystem.
  • Hands-on experience with sensing hardware and software pipelines for cameras, LIDAR, or radar is a plus.
  • A proven publication track record at top scientific conferences and journals.
  • A team player with a willingness to learn new industrial applications and work across a broad range of technologies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
