Summary

The Neuroscience Department within BioMedical Research at Novartis Pharma AG in Basel, Switzerland, is on the lookout for a motivated and experienced Research or Senior Scientist. This role is integral to our in vivo neuroinflammation team, contributing to several research projects aimed at developing new therapies for neurodegenerative disorders. Your primary focus will center on novel neuroimmune cell pathways, elucidating the mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, and ex vivo/in vivo levels.

As a member of our team, you will work independently while closely collaborating with other members of the Neurosciences group to plan, execute, document, analyze, and interpret experiments.

Please note that this is a part-time job share position, with a maximum of 70% working time.

About the Role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, conducting, and independently protocolling in vivo studies focusing on neuroinflammatory pathways.
  • Establishing new in vivo models for neuroinflammatory/neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Performing and interpreting ex vivo analyses, with an emphasis on histology, biochemistry, FACS, and molecular biology.
  • Developing and executing in vitro cellular assays to assess inflammatory processes.
  • Presenting data and contextualizing findings.
  • Supporting general laboratory duties.

Your profile:

  • University degree (MSc) or equivalent qualification, preferably in neuroscience, immunology, or cell biology. Please note that PhD candidates will not be considered for this position.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of relevant lab-based work experience in an industrial or academic setting.
  • Previous experience in the neuroscience drug discovery area would be advantageous.
  • Strong expertise in in vivo rodent work (e.g., different routes of dosing, surgery, stereotactic brain injections, behavior, perfusion). Relevant animal experiment course available (e.g., LTK1).
  • Experience with various histological methods, microscopy, and image analysis.
  • Familiarity with RNA/DNA technologies and biochemistry, e.g., qPCR technologies, Western blotting.
  • Good knowledge of immunology and immunological methods such as flow cytometry, HTRF, and ELISA.
  • Proficient in cell culture work, e.g., primary cells, iPSCs.
  • Experience evaluating large datasets, with strong documentation capabilities and interest in using new informatics analysis tools.
  • Eager to learn and integrate new techniques and concepts, capable of presenting results, applying literature data, engaging in exploratory activities, and working independently as well as part of a team.
  • Exhibits scientific curiosity, initiative, commitment, flexibility, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of successful collaborations and open communication with various stakeholders. A strong team player and networker.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
