Research Engineer

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

We are looking for a Research Engineer to join ongoing and future research projects at the intersection of machine learning and structural design (e.g., trusses, space frames).

Project Background

The work focuses on data-driven generation of structural systems. You will be involved in developing, experimenting with, and evaluating machine learning models that help navigate large design spaces. This role is well-suited for individuals who enjoy research-driven development, prototyping ideas, and engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations.

This position is offered on a fixed-term basis for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding. Starting date: March/April 2026.

Job Description

  • Conceptual structural systems (e.g., trusses, space frames)
  • Utilize unsupervised machine learning and deep learning methods
  • Analyze, visualize, and interpret learned design spaces
  • Contribute to research outputs (prototypes, publications, open-source code)

Profile

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in STEM
  • Strong proficiency in Python
  • Practical experience with PyTorch
  • Solid understanding of unsupervised machine learning and deep learning
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Graph Neural Networks (GNN)
  • Familiarity with PyTorch Geometric (PyG)
  • Experience or interest in Reinforcement Learning
  • Background or strong interest in optimization
