Research Engineer

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

We are seeking a Research Engineer to join our ongoing and future research projects at the intersection of machine learning and structural design (e.g., trusses, space frames).

Project Background

The focus of this role is on the data-driven generation of structural systems. You will be involved in developing, experimenting with, and evaluating machine learning models that help navigate large design spaces. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys research-driven development, prototyping ideas, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.

This position is offered on a fixed-term basis for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding. Expected starting date: March/April 2026.

Job Description

  • Conceptualize structural systems (e.g., trusses, space frames)
  • Apply unsupervised machine learning and deep learning methods
  • Analyze, visualize, and interpret learned design spaces
  • Contribute to research outputs (prototypes, publications, open-source code)

Profile

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in STEM
  • Strong proficiency in Python
  • Practical experience with PyTorch
  • Solid understanding of unsupervised machine learning and deep learning
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Graph Neural Networks (GNN)
  • Familiarity with PyTorch Geometric (PyG)
  • Experience with or interest in Reinforcement Learning
  • Background or strong interest in optimization
