Research Engineer

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer to join our ongoing and future research projects at the intersection of machine learning and structural design, focusing on innovative structures such as trusses and space frames.

Project Background

The work centers on the data-driven generation of structural systems. In this role, you will develop, experiment with, and evaluate machine learning models that facilitate navigating extensive design spaces. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive in a research-driven environment, enjoy prototyping innovative ideas, and seek interdisciplinary collaborations.

Offered as a fixed-term position for one year, there is potential for extension based on performance and funding availability. The anticipated start date is March/April 2026.

Job Description

  • Conceptualize structural systems (e.g., trusses, space frames)
  • Utilize unsupervised machine learning and deep learning methods
  • Analyze, visualize, and interpret learned design spaces
  • Contribute to research outputs including prototypes, publications, and open-source code

Profile

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in a STEM field
  • Strong proficiency in Python
  • Practical experience with PyTorch
  • Solid understanding of unsupervised machine learning and deep learning
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Graph Neural Networks (GNN)
  • Familiarity with PyTorch Geometric (PyG)
  • Experience with or interest in Reinforcement Learning
  • Background or strong interest in optimization
