Research Assistants (Humanities / Social Sciences)

10% - 30%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Law, Economics, and Business research group, headed by Professor Dr. Alexander Stremitzer at ETH Zurich, is seeking Research Assistants in the fields of Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

We are looking for highly motivated students with a keen interest in anthropology, sociology, theology, legal history and theory, religion & law, and/or philosophy. You will contribute to a significant interdisciplinary research project that examines how and why various societies have historically chosen to regulate morally or socially contentious practices through different legal frameworks.

Job Description

  • Gathering materials (scientific journals, textbooks, statutory texts, codes, court decisions, and doctrinal writings) on the regulation of socially controversial practices across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Reviewing interdisciplinary literature from anthropology, sociology, political theory, philosophy, and religious studies related to societal taboos, tolerance, decriminalization, legalization, and moral compromise.
  • Preparing annotated bibliographies, literature reviews, and research summaries.
  • Salaries are competitive and aligned with ETH standards.

Profile

  • We are seeking advanced students (preferably advanced Bachelor or at Master level) in history, theology/religious studies, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, or related fields.
  • Ideal candidates will possess strong academic records and the capability to engage with complex, interdisciplinary materials.
  • Candidates must be comfortable researching politically or morally sensitive topics and be proactive in locating relevant sources across multiple disciplines.
