Research Assistant / Pairwise Comparison of Subvectors in a Large Number of Matrices

Location: Zurich, fixed-term, 10%-30%

The chair focuses on research primarily in the fields of applied international and public economics, as well as applied econometrics. Our research outputs are disseminated mainly through presentations at international conferences and workshops, as well as publications in leading academic journals in economics.

Project Background

We possess fully vectorized data of numerous musical scores, with each score represented as a matrix. The objective is to pairwise compare n-grams (snippets of fixed size) across all these scores to establish similarity scores for each pair of pieces.

Job Description

Given the substantial size of the data, the problem needs to be approached in a simplified manner:

  • Identify the most relevant columns in a piece based on informed hypotheses.
  • Examine random segments of pieces (or subdivisions of those segments) instead of analyzing the entire matrix.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the simplified approach using a small set of complete score comparisons.

Profile

We are seeking a student proficient in both C++ or RUST as well as Python.

Existing Python routines can accomplish the tasks laid out for full matrices, but the following adjustments are necessary:

  • The routines must be modified to implement the new approach that utilizes random snippets from selected data.
  • Python is comparatively slower; thus, utilizing C++ or RUST would enhance performance.
