Research Assistant / Pairwise Comparison of Subvectors in a Large Number of Matrices

The chair focuses on research primarily in applied international and public economics, alongside applied econometrics. Our research findings are disseminated chiefly through presentations at international conferences and workshops, as well as through publications in prestigious academic journals in the field of economics.

Project Background

We have fully vectorized data representing a large number of musical scores, each depicted as a matrix. The objective is to conduct pairwise comparisons of n-grams (snippets of fixed size) across all these scores to derive similarity scores for each pair of pieces.

Job Description

The data size is substantial, necessitating a simplified approach to tackle the problem:

• Identify the most relevant columns in each piece based on informed estimations.
• Examine random segments of pieces (or segments of segments) instead of analyzing the entire matrix.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the simplified approach using a small set of complete score comparisons.

Profile

We seek a student proficient in both C++ or RUST, as well as Python. While Python routines currently exist for executing the aforementioned tasks with complete matrices, the following adjustments are required:

• The routines must be modified to accommodate the approach based on random snippets in selected datasets.
• C++ or RUST is preferred due to its superior speed compared to Python.
