We are hiring!

The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Bern (Switzerland) intends to appoint a Professor of the History of Philosophy (Full-time) (Successor to Prof. Dr. Richard King) with effect from 1 August 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The core responsibilities of the professorship include wide-ranging teaching and internationally visible research in the field of the history of philosophy. One research focus must fall within the period, roughly, from Hobbes to Hegel (inclusive). The successful candidate should conduct outstanding research that is relevant to systematic questions and arguments in contemporary philosophy and relates to central themes in theoretical or practical philosophy. A willingness to reflect critically on the methods and canon of the history of philosophy is desirable. A depth of experience in academic teaching is essential, as is the ability and willingness to cover a wide area within the history of philosophy in a way that is appealing to students. Teaching and supervision will be conducted in German and English. If the successful candidate is not already able to teach and supervise in German, the necessary language skills should be acquired within two years.

The Institute of Philosophy emphasizes close collaboration across professorships and research areas. Accordingly, candidates should demonstrate a cooperative approach and interest in intra- and interdisciplinary collaboration. Experience in securing external funding and managing research projects is also desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic administration of the Institute.

Who you are

Depending on qualifications, the successful candidate will be appointed at the level of assistant professorship with tenure track, associate professorship, or full professorship. To be considered for a full or associate professorship, candidates must have a habilitation or demonstrate equivalent achievement. The requirements for appointment to an assistant professorship with tenure track include an above-average doctoral thesis and an advanced habilitation project or equivalent achievement. Appointment to an assistant professorship with tenure track is initially for four years and can be extended for a further two years. Subject to a successful evaluation, the position may then be converted into an associate professorship and made permanent.
