We Are Hiring!

The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Bern (Switzerland) is seeking to appoint a Professor of the History of Philosophy (Full-time), succeeding Prof. Dr. Richard King. The expected start date is 1 August 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The core responsibilities of the professorship include:

  • Extensive teaching and internationally visible research in the field of the history of philosophy.
  • One research focus that falls within the period from Hobbes to Hegel (inclusive).
  • Conducting outstanding research relevant to systematic questions and arguments in contemporary philosophy.
  • Engaging with central themes in both theoretical and practical philosophy.

We welcome candidates who are willing to reflect critically on the methods and canon of the history of philosophy. A robust background in academic teaching is essential, with the ability and enthusiasm to engage students across a broad spectrum of topics in the history of philosophy. Teaching and supervision will be conducted in both German and English. Candidates not already proficient in German will be expected to attain the necessary language skills within two years.

The Institute fosters close collaboration across different professorships and research areas. Therefore, candidates should exhibit a cooperative attitude and eagerness for both intra- and interdisciplinary collaboration. Experience in securing external funding and managing research projects will be advantageous. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic administration of the Institute.

Who You Are

Appointment will be made based on qualifications, potentially at the level of assistant professorship with tenure track, associate professorship, or full professorship. Candidates seeking a full or associate professorship should possess a habilitation or demonstrate equivalent achievements. For an assistant professorship with tenure track, an above-average doctoral thesis and a well-formed habilitation project or its equivalent are required. This position will initially be offered for four years, extendable for an additional two years. Subject to a favorable evaluation, the role may be moved to an associate professorship and made permanent.
