Job Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate scientist and leader specialized in RNAi therapeutics to join the xRNA group within the Biologics Research Center (BRC) in Basel, Switzerland, as Principal Scientist, xRNA. The xRNA team is committed to excellence and drives a diverse portfolio of siRNA assets and platform innovations aimed at modulating gene expression via RNAi. Our collaborative efforts with Disease Area groups, Global Discovery Chemistry, and Discovery Sciences focus on expanding the application of RNAi beyond the liver.

About the Role

As Principal Scientist in xRNA Therapeutics, you will join the Biologics Research Center (BRC) as a leader at the forefront of innovative medicine development aimed at improving patient lives. The BRC builds the biologics pipeline in collaboration with Biomedical Research Disease Areas using a diverse array of technologies for the discovery of antibody, protein, gene therapy, and RNA-based therapeutics. The successful candidate will have a strong research track record in drug discovery and will provide critical expertise in the development of next-generation RNA-based medicines and their acceleration to patients. You will lead boldly and collaborate effectively across therapeutic and functional areas to advance our growing RNA portfolio across various disease states.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of highly talented scientists at the Basel site, responsible for driving RNAi-based therapies to patients through design, screening, and characterization.
  • Establish mid- and long-term goals, plans of action, and implementation strategies for the local xRNA team in alignment with the global strategy for xRNA and the Biologics Research Center.
  • Develop and implement strategies for next-generation extrahepatic RNAi across various disease areas, including renal, cardiometabolic, and cardiovascular.
  • Co-lead RNAi drug discovery and development in partnership with Global Discovery Chemistry and Disease Areas.
  • Collaborate with downstream development colleagues to advance lead candidates toward full development.
  • Coordinate activities with other global BRC and functional groups.
  • Offer innovative approaches to scientific challenges and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Identify unmet needs within Disease Areas and collaborate on novel therapeutic solutions.

Role Requirements

  • PhD-level scientist with 5 years of relevant experience, recognized as an expert in RNAi both internally and externally.
  • Prior experience in drug discovery focused on RNAi design, screening, and characterization.
  • Deep knowledge of RNAi chemistry and biology applied to lead optimization of therapeutic candidates.
  • A proven track record of success, as evidenced by publications and patents.
  • Desirable knowledge in the application of RNAi to biology in areas pertaining to renal metabolic diseases.
  • Highly collaborative spirit to accelerate programs toward the clinic; strong communication skills, creativity, and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with extrahepatic/kidney targeting of RNAi is preferred.
