Postdoctoral Researcher in Ultrahigh-Pressure Mineral Physics and Geophysics

100%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Experimental Mineral Physics (EMP) group in the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology, led by Prof. Motohiko Murakami, invites qualified candidates to apply for a postdoctoral position specializing in ultrahigh-pressure mineral physics and geophysics.

Our research emphasizes ultrahigh-pressure experimental mineral physics to examine the internal structure, mineralogy, and evolution of the Earth and other planets.

Job Description

This is a fixed-term position for 3 years, with a start date as soon as possible.

The project entails:

  • Conducting high-pressure and high-temperature experimental work utilizing a laser-heated/externally-heated diamond anvil cell. This will be complemented by various laser spectroscopic methods (Raman, Brillouin scattering), along with synchrotron X-rays, to ascertain the physical properties of deep planetary materials.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Perform high-pressure and high-temperature experimental research in collaboration with group members.
  • Engage in teaching activities.
  • Undertake infrastructural tasks.

The position will be based at the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology, ETH Zurich (Prof. Motohiko Murakami).

Profile

Applicants should have:

  • A doctoral degree in Earth Sciences, Physics, or a related field, with expertise in high-pressure mineral physics, including areas such as mineralogy, chemistry, or elasticity of deep planetary interiors.
  • High-pressure experimental skills, particularly with laser-heated/externally-heated diamond anvil cell apparatus, including the development of optical, spectroscopic, or infrared laser heating systems.
  • An excellent academic record and fluency in written and spoken English.
