Postdoctoral Researcher in Synthetic Biology-Inspired Therapies

ETH Zurich - April 15, 2026

Postdoc Position for Synthetic Biology-Inspired Therapies

100%, Basel, fixed-term

A World-Class Research Environment at the Nexus of Biology, Engineering, and Physical Sciences

The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group, led by Prof. Dr. Martin Fussenegger at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich in Basel, invites exceptional candidates to join us in groundbreaking projects aimed at developing synthetic biology-inspired human therapies.

The D-BSSE is the first truly interdisciplinary research department, merging theoretical and experimental biology with advanced bioengineering. Our collaborative approach unites experts from material science, physics, and chemistry, driving transformative advancements in systems biology, biotechnology, and synthetic biology. Located in Basel, Switzerland—at the heart of the BioValley, which hosts 40% of the global life science industry and numerous leading pharmaceutical companies—the D-BSSE provides a unique environment for impactful translational research, offering unparalleled access to both academic and industrial expertise.

Project Background

Advancing the Frontiers of Cell-based Therapies and Synthetic Biology

Our group applies cutting-edge synthetic biology principles to engineer human cells, aspiring to create next-generation cell-based therapies targeting cancer, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune conditions, and infectious diseases. Utilizing innovative platforms such as novel biosensors, gene switches, genetic closed-loop circuits, and chemical structures that actuate cellular activities, we design programmable cellular implants and devices for therapeutic applications. By merging fundamental discoveries with translational development, we aim to shape the future of biomedical innovation.

Job Description

  • Postdoctoral projects will involve molecular engineering, cell programming, and chemical-biological interfacing to develop human cells using synthetic gene circuits and biosensing platforms.
  • Projects will include the creation of novel biosensing systems for real-time monitoring of cellular states and the development of genetic architectures for precise therapeutic protein regulation.
  • This role will require translating research advances into programmable cellular implant prototypes.
  • The work will be highly interdisciplinary, fostering collaboration with molecular biologists, bioengineers, and clinical researchers to accelerate translation into clinically relevant therapies.

Profile

  • We seek highly motivated candidates eager to bridge basic and translational research in cell biology and synthetic biology.
  • Applicants should possess strong skills in molecular and cell biology techniques, including the cultivation and engineering of primary human cells and mammalian cell lines.
  • Experience with in vivo techniques and completion of an accredited laboratory animal science course (FELASA / LTK or equivalent) will be advantageous.
  • A strong publication record is preferred, along with the ambition to pursue a career in academia, industrial R&D, or biotechnology entrepreneurship.
