The Chair of Production and Operations Management (POM), led by Prof. Torbjørn Netland at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics (D-MTEC) at ETH Zurich, invites applications for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher (or Senior Scientist for experienced candidates) in Smart Manufacturing and/or Operational Excellence.
The Chair of POM at ETH Zurich engages in empirical and innovative POM research with significant relevance. Our team publishes work across engineering and management disciplines, aiming for prestigious conferences and journals and emphasizing empirical research in collaboration with industry partners.
To strengthen our team, we seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a capacity for conducting and publishing leading-edge research in production management through partnerships with companies or utilizing company-level data. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in:
This full-time position offers a competitive salary in line with ETH standards and provides an excellent opportunity for career advancement in academia. The primary focus of this role will be research, particularly on publishing in top POM journals (e.g., JOM, POM, M&SOM, Management Science) or leading Industrial Engineering journals (e.g., IJPR, IEEE TEM, CII, JMS). The role also includes co-supervising doctoral students, with joint publication opportunities, while research project acquisition and management may also be part of the responsibilities. Limited teaching and service duties are expected. The starting date is flexible to accommodate the selected candidate's availability, and the contract duration ranges from 2 to 6 years, subject to ETH Zurich's regulations.
We are looking for a candidate with a background in industrial engineering or operations management who aspires to advance their career by contributing to the Chair of POM, which focuses exclusively on empirical research. Candidates with a background in mathematical modeling or Operations Research are discouraged from applying unless they possess a substantial empirical component as well.
The ideal candidate will be nearing completion or will have obtained a Ph.D. from a recognized institution. Exceptional oral and written English skills are essential. Proficiency in the German language is advantageous for potential collaboration with Swiss manufacturers but is not a mandatory requirement. The primary working language is English.
We expect very strong research and writing abilities, prioritizing research quality over quantity. We seek candidates with innovative and realistic research ideas and discourage those with extensive publication lists predominantly in lower-tier journals.
Prospective candidates should exhibit strong teamwork skills. While industrial experience is beneficial, it is not required. The successful candidate will join an ambitious, dynamic research team, conducive to excellent research development.
