The Chair of Production and Operations Management (POM), led by Prof. Torbjørn Netland at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics (D-MTEC) at ETH Zurich, invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher (or Senior Scientist for experienced candidates) in Smart Manufacturing and/or Operational Excellence.

The Chair of POM at ETH Zurich undertakes empirical and innovative production and operations management research of high relevance. We strive for publication in top-tier engineering and management disciplines, with an emphasis on empirical research in collaboration with industry partners.

Project Background

We are seeking outstanding candidates who demonstrate proven capabilities in conducting and publishing leading-edge research in production management, particularly through partnerships with companies or utilizing company-level data. We are interested in candidates with expertise in either:

• Smart Manufacturing: This includes the application of digitalization, machine learning, analytics, and other Industry 4.0 technologies in manufacturing.
• Operational Excellence: This encompasses traditional industrial engineering and management topics such as lean production, world-class manufacturing, workforce augmentation, and continuous improvement.

Job Description

We offer a full-time position with a competitive salary in accordance with ETH standards, aimed at advancing the candidate's academic career. The primary focus of this position is research, particularly in publishing in top POM journals (e.g., JOM, POM, M&SOM, Management Science) and top Industrial Engineering journals (e.g., IJPR, IEEE TEM, CII, JMS). Part of the role includes co-supervising doctoral students and seeking joint publication opportunities. Additional responsibilities may include managing research projects, with limited teaching and service duties. We offer flexibility regarding the start date to accommodate the selected candidate's availability. The contract duration is limited to 2-6 years, subject to ETH Zurich's regulations.

Profile

We seek a candidate with a background in industrial engineering or operations management eager to contribute to the Chair of POM while advancing their career. The Chair emphasizes empirical research; thus, candidates with a strong focus on mathematical modeling/Operations Research should consider their application only if they possess significant empirical research experience.

The successful candidate will be nearing the completion or will hold a Ph.D. from a recognized university. Excellent oral and written English skills are essential. While fluency in German is advantageous for potential collaboration with Swiss manufacturers, it is not a strict criterion for selection. English serves as the working language.

We require very strong research and writing skills, with a clear emphasis on research quality over quantity. Candidates are expected to present innovative and feasible research ideas. Those with lengthy publication lists where the majority of papers are in lower-tier journals should refrain from applying.

A strong team player is needed for this role. While industrial experience is advantageous, it is not mandatory. The successful applicant will join a dynamic and enjoyable research team, fostering an excellent research environment.
