Postdoctoral Researcher / Postdoctoral Researcheress

ETH Zurich - April 26, 2026

Postdoctoral Researcher at Construction Heritage and Preservation

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Professorship of Construction Heritage and Preservation is currently searching for a postdoctoral researcher to start in September 2026 or upon agreement.

Project Background

The Professorship of Construction Heritage and Preservation addresses theoretical and practical challenges related to the methodical collection, assessment, and preservation of monuments. It is affiliated with the Institute for Preservation and Construction History (IDB) and the Institute for Technology in Architecture (ITA).

Expertise in traditional construction methods, materials, architectural design principles, and building processes is essential for the responsible management of historic buildings. As we consider the future development of our building stock, it is important to also examine newer construction processes, materials, and trends that significantly influence architecture. There remains a gap in understanding the aging and reparability of these modern constructions, and research into their long-term impacts on building stock is still evolving.

Our research encompasses a variety of building stocks, from older to newer, including pressing questions of their monument value and conservation challenges. Noteworthy engineering works in Switzerland, along with newly developed construction processes and methods, are of particular interest. Additionally, our teaching activities involve elective courses and core seminars that enable students to engage deeply with contemporary issues in preservation. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical and practical aspects of the field. The professorship also provides academic continuing education programs that blend high academic standards with practical relevance, equipping students with specific professional skills.
