Postdoctoral Researcher / Postdoctoral Researcheress

ETH Zurich - February 24, 2026

Postdoc Position in Protocol Development for Isolation of Microbial Strains for Sustainable Protein Production

100%, Basel, fixed-term

We develop technologies to exploit whole-cell and enzyme catalysts for the manufacturing of substances utilized in sustainable chemistry, innovative food, and active pharmaceutical ingredients.

For a third-party funded project in the realm of innovative, non-agricultural food aimed at microbial protein manufacturing from reactive gases, we are offering a PostDoc position.

Project Background

This project is part of the EC-sponsored consortium HydroCow, which includes partners from the UK, Germany, and Finland, specializing in metabolic flux modeling, molecular engineering, manufacturing, and marketing.

In HydroCow, we are enhancing an earlier developed ultra-high-throughput screening platform that facilitates the rapid identification of improved industrial production strains. Central to this platform are microcolonies cultivated in gel capsules, which undergo fluorescence-based analysis for quantification of the product of interest. This technology will be utilized for recombinant protein secretion for the first time.

Job Description

The postdoctoral fellow will undertake the following tasks:

  • Development of high-throughput assays, typically utilizing fluorescence mediated by biosensors or (bio)chemicals
  • Characterization of assay performance using lead strains
  • Execution of large-scale screening campaigns with up to 1E6 variant strains
  • Co-representation and reporting of BPL results in consortium meetings
  • Co-coordination of tasks with all consortium partners

Profile

  • PhD in molecular biology, microbiology, or industrial biotechnology
  • Strong communication skills (in English) and the ability to work collaboratively
  • We are particularly interested in candidates with all or a subset of the following additional qualifications:
    • A solid background in chemistry and spectrometric analyses
    • Experience developing protocols from scratch (rather than using commercial kits)
    • Ability to work under controlled atmospheres (e.g., glove boxes)
  • Availability to commence employment promptly is advantageous

Workplace

The position will be based in a dynamic and innovative environment, promoting collaboration and intellectual growth.

We Offer

We provide:

  • An intellectually challenging position within an inspiring interdisciplinary team
  • Opportunities to engage in multifaceted, applied work in a larger international team that includes academia and industry
  • Development of technologies and protocols with potential commercial applications
  • Opportunities for personal development, including writing, presentation, and project management skills
  • Possibilities to work with and supervise students
  • Participation in international conferences and project workshops
