Postdoctoral Researcher in Ultrahigh-Pressure Mineral Physics and Geophysics

100%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Experimental Mineral Physics (EMP) group at the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology, led by Prof. Motohiko Murakami, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in ultrahigh-pressure mineral physics and geophysics.

Our research aims to investigate the ultrahigh-pressure experimental mineral physics to explore the internal structure, mineralogy, and evolution of the Earth and other planets.

Job Description

This fixed-term position offers a duration of three years with a start date as soon as possible.

The project will involve:

  • Conducting high-pressure and high-temperature experimental work using a laser-heated/externally-heated diamond anvil cell, combined with various laser spectroscopic methods (including Raman and Brillouin scattering) and synchrotron X-rays to determine the physical properties of deep planetary materials.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Perform high-pressure and high-temperature experimental research in collaboration with group members.
  • Teach and undertake infrastructural tasks as required.

This position will be based at the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology, ETH Zurich (Prof. Motohiko Murakami).

Profile

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A doctoral degree in Earth Sciences, Physics, or a related field, with expertise in high-pressure mineral physics relevant to research topics such as mineralogy, chemistry, or the elasticity of deep planetary interiors.
  • High-pressure experimental skills using a laser-heated/externally-heated diamond anvil cell apparatus, including the ability to develop optical, spectroscopic, or infrared laser heating systems.
  • An excellent academic record and fluency in written and spoken English.
