Postdoctoral Researcher / Postdoctoral Researcheress

ETH Zurich - January 21, 2026

Postdoc Position in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis

Location: 100%, Basel, Fixed-term

We are developing lab-on-chip technology (or microfluidic technology) for applications across the life sciences and biomedicine. Our interdisciplinary approach includes the design and manufacturing of miniaturized platforms and their optimization for biochemical assays and analytical procedures.

For a third-party funded project running for four years, we are offering a position for a Postdoctoral Fellow.

Project Background

The project RadiantDx is a multidisciplinary, collaborative initiative that addresses the diagnosis of sepsis. Sepsis is a severe health condition characterized by nonspecific symptoms like high fever. To assist healthcare professionals in determining the appropriate treatment for patients, we aim to develop a miniaturized system for the rapid diagnosis of sepsis, which will help prevent unnecessary antibiotic administration and lead to improved patient survival and recovery. In collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the University of Zurich, the Department of Informatics at ETH Zurich, and several other partners, we are tackling the challenge by combining microfluidic technology, sequencing, and rapid data analysis.

In the Bioanalytics Group, a PhD student and a postdoctoral fellow will work together on various aspects of the microfluidic platform and sample preparation.

Job Description

The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with a PhD student on the following tasks:

  • Design and manufacture a microfluidic platform
  • Develop, optimize, and test biological assays
  • Perform imaging, data analysis, and interpretation
  • Prepare the platform for use in a clinical setting
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participate actively in group meetings
  • Write reports and present results in meetings of the research consortium
  • Coordinate work with partners of the research consortium

Profile

  • PhD degree in fields related to microfluidics and microsystems engineering, biomedical engineering, or interdisciplinary study programs.
  • Candidates with backgrounds in biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, or microbiology with experience in method and technology development are also encouraged to apply.
  • The integration of biological and technological aspects is central to our group and this project. A suitable candidate should possess a strong willingness to learn and refine novel methods, be open to diverse research disciplines, and communicate effectively across fields.
  • Good communication skills in English and demonstrated teamwork abilities.

Workplace

The successful candidate will be embedded within an intellectually stimulating and collaborative environment. You will engage with a diverse team of computer scientists, clinicians, and microbiologists, working on impactful research that translates from bench to bedside.

We Offer

  • An intellectually challenging position in an inspiring interdisciplinary environment
  • Multifaceted work with a larger team focused on applied science
  • Opportunities for personal development, including skills in writing, presentation, and project management
  • Possibility to work with and supervise students
  • Participation in international conferences
