Postdoctoral Position in Science, Technology and Society (STS)

The Ethics, Technology and Society research group in the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS), led by Prof. Dr. Margarita Boenig-Liptsin, invites you to apply for a Post-doctoral researcher in Science, Technology and Society (STS).

This position is for a fixed term of two years at 100% employment. Compensation will be in accordance with the established salary rates at ETH Zurich. The opportunity is geared toward researchers who will complete their PhD by January 2026 or have completed their PhD within the last two years.

The Ethics, Technology and Society group focuses on the interplay between science, technology, and society, employing frameworks and methods from Science, Technology & Society (STS), along with disciplines such as history, philosophy, anthropology, critical theory, and the arts. Our approach prioritizes interpretive, qualitative methods that blend situated ethnographic detail with an understanding of the relevant cultural and political contexts, ideally in a cross-national comparative perspective. Project Background

The selected candidate is expected to develop an independent research project in the area of digital technologies (including computing, data, algorithms, and AI) in society. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in STS and humanities pedagogy within a technical university setting, as well as those capable of developing research and teaching partnerships with computer science faculty and researchers. Engagement with the ethical, social, and political dimensions of AI in public discourse is highly valued in this role.

Job Description

• Conduct qualitative social science (STS) research in the specified area.
• Work towards publications in recognized international journals, including co-authored papers with other group members.
• (Co-)Develop and (co-)teach MA and Bachelor level courses in the Science in Perspective Program.
• Contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives in collaboration with computer science faculty, researchers, and students at ETH Zurich.
• Engage publicly on issues related to the ethical, social, and political aspects of digital technologies within ETH's Public Policy School, the university, and the broader community.
• Support grant writing efforts to secure external funding for research initiatives.
• Participate actively in group events, assisting with meeting organization and project maintenance.
• Collaborate with professors, students, and researchers in the D-GESS department, ETH Zurich, and the international STS community.

Profile

Essential experience, skills, and characteristics:

• Completion or anticipated completion (by January 2026) of a dissertation in Science, Technology and Society (STS) or a related field, such as History, Philosophy of Science or Technology, Geography, Law, Policy Studies, Innovation Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, or Political Science. Candidates with a PhD in engineering or science, accompanied by solid STS training and research experience, are also encouraged to apply.
• A distinct research profile in STS or related fields, evidenced by publications and/or teaching experience focusing on digital technologies and society.
• Interest and experience in STS and humanities pedagogy in engineering contexts.
• Willingness to collaborate with computer scientists and natural scientists, and to engage with students, policymakers, and the public on ethical, social, and political matters related to digital technologies.
• Broad knowledge of STS topics, theories, and methods.
• Proficiency in English.

Desirable criteria:

• Knowledge of co-productionist and comparative approaches in STS.
• International experience.
• Strong team orientation.
• Proficiency in German, French, or Italian.
