Postdoc Position: Modeling the Circular Economy

100%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Energy and Process Systems Engineering (EPSE) Group at ETH Zürich is seeking a Postdoc to develop a roadmap to net-zero for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and to model the potential for a circular economy in Swiss hard-to-abate sectors. Led by Prof. Dr. André Bardow, the EPSE group is committed to advancing sustainable energy and chemical process systems, covering research from the molecular level to system-scale applications. We focus on integrating process analysis with system modeling to design optimal technologies and transition pathways effectively.

Project Background

To meet Switzerland's net-zero climate target by 2050, it is crucial to minimize greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors. However, certain industries, including chemical production, cement manufacturing, and waste incineration, face challenges in avoiding some emissions. These residual emissions can be managed through capturing them at the source and storing them (CO2 capture and storage, CCS) or implementing negative emission technologies (NETs). Due to the high costs of these solutions, Switzerland is exploring alternatives to mitigate these emissions.

The SWEET ACHIEVE consortium has been established to investigate unavoidable emissions in Switzerland. A key objective is to identify synergies among hard-to-abate sectors that could reduce dependency on CCS and NETs.

Our project focuses on two principal aims:

  • Developing a comprehensive net-zero roadmap for the Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical industry, currently lacking.
  • Identifying and analyzing synergies between the building, chemical/pharmaceutical, recycling, and waste-to-energy sectors to lower emissions and lessen reliance on CCS and NETs in Switzerland's transition.

We will employ system modeling, techno-economic assessment, and environmental analysis to explore these hard-to-abate sectors.

Job Description

Your primary responsibility will be to create a system model for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry in Switzerland and design optimal pathways for its transition to net zero. This analysis will encompass assessing both the costs and environmental impacts of various decarbonization options, as well as expanding the model to include the waste-to-energy and recycling sectors.

In this capacity, you will engage with industry partners to integrate their insights on the strengths and limitations of decarbonization strategies and to gather practical perspectives. Additionally, you will lead your group's contributions to the SWEET ACHIEVE consortium, taking on two work package leadership roles.

This role will also involve mentoring and co-supervising student projects and theses. You will participate in various group and institute activities, and as an integral part of your work, you will publish your findings in peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences.

Profile

We are looking for a proactive and motivated candidate who meets the qualifications for a position at ETH Zurich and possesses a doctoral degree in process engineering, mechanical engineering, energy science & technology, or chemical engineering from a reputable university. Strong experience in system modeling, environmental impact, and cost assessment is required, ideally with expertise in the chemical industry. You should be highly motivated to learn, develop, and apply novel optimization methods and predictive assessment tools within an interdisciplinary team. The ability to work independently and excellent communication skills in English (both written and spoken) are essential.

Workplace

ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer that provides excellent working conditions. You can anticipate an exciting work environment, cultural diversity, and attractive offers and benefits.

We Offer

We provide a full-time position for the duration of your postdoc, with a start date as early as December 1, 2025. This position is initially for one year, extending to two years. We foster a supportive environment that encourages both professional and personal growth. You will collaborate within an interdisciplinary team of researchers specializing in process design, energy system optimization, and experimental determination of thermophysical properties. Publication of your results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences will be an integral part of your role. Although teaching is not a requirement, opportunities to contribute to teaching activities may be available if desired.

The Postdoc position provides access to cutting-edge computational resources that facilitate impactful research. You will develop critical thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and project management skills while contributing to the academic community through publications and presentations at leading conferences.
