Postdoctoral Researcher / Postdoctoral Researcheress

ETH Zurich - July 6, 2025

Postdoctoral Researcher in the Area of Endoscopic Video Enhancement

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The enhancement of endoscopic videos is a critical yet complex task. These videos play a vital role in various clinical interventions, where clarity of imaging data is essential for procedural success. Given the challenging imaging conditions, endoscopic video quality can be severely compromised by a range of artifacts. This project aims to develop the next generation of enhancement algorithms specifically designed for endoscopic videos, with a focus on applications for real-time interventions. Development efforts will prioritize both enhancement quality and computational efficiency, particularly with respect to latency.

Project Background

The successful candidate will join the Biomedical Image Computing (BMIC) team at ETH Zurich and also be part of the Computer Vision Lab (CVL). This project is conducted in collaboration with an industrial implementation partner, who will assist with hardware and software integration.

Job Description

The position involves duties across three main areas: (1) research, (2) teaching, and (3) supervision.

  • Research: The researcher is expected to conduct cutting-edge research on the analysis and enhancement of endoscopic videos. This includes the development of new algorithms and methods, along with the software implementation of these advancements. Maintaining open communication and fostering collaboration with project partners is essential, as well as completing project deliverables.
  • Teaching: The researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to courses taught by members of the BMIC group, such as Image Analysis and Computer Vision, and Medical Image Analysis. While teaching is not mandatory, it is an option available to the researcher.
  • Supervision: The researcher will be expected to contribute to the supervision of semester and master's thesis projects conducted by master’s students within the department.

Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline,
  • Experience in the analysis of endoscopic video data,
  • Expertise in image and/or video enhancement algorithms,
  • A strong interest in developing real-time, low-latency algorithms,
  • A minimum of two first-author publications in top-tier venues such as IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis, MICCAI, IPMI, CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, or ICML,
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills in English.

Workplace

The position will be based in Zurich, providing a stimulating work environment supported by state-of-the-art facilities.
