Postdoctoral Researcher in Data Science/Political Science/Economics

The Professorship of International Relations and Data Science is currently seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year position (100%). The position is based at ETH Zurich and is supervised by Prof. Livia Schubiger.

The candidate will collaborate with the IRDS group on projects that apply natural language processing (NLP), causal inference, and machine learning to investigate norms surrounding gender-based and other forms of violence, as well as explore strategies to mitigate such violence.

The selected candidate will be part of Professor Livia Schubiger's group at ETH Zurich. The candidate is expected to conduct research for group projects while also pursuing an independent research agenda.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who can work both independently and within a team of international scientists. The ideal candidate should possess excellent academic qualifications, strong coding and writing skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment. The start date is negotiable, and the position is based in Zurich, Switzerland.

The successful candidate must have:

  • A doctoral degree in a social science discipline (e.g., political science or economics) with a specialization in causal inference or data science/computational social science, or a degree in computer science (or a related discipline) coupled with a strong interest in social science questions.
  • Significant coding skills (Python and/or R for those with a social sciences background) and experience with NLP methods (or a strong motivation to acquire such skills independently).
  • An interest in causal machine learning and other advanced techniques for causal inference.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • A motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team.
  • The ability to work effectively in collaborative settings.
