About Us

The "Stomatal Biology" group is seeking applications for a fully funded post-doctoral position (2 years, extension possible). Our research focuses on understanding how grasses and succulents develop and pattern their stomata, utilizing techniques such as single-cell genomics, live imaging, genetics, and protein biochemistry. Based at the Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Bern, our work bridges plant developmental genetics, cell biology, and gas-exchange physiology. We are looking to recruit a postdoc to study the spatial coordination of vein and stomatal development in grass leaves, as part of the research unit "Cereal Stem Cell Systems - RU52350".

Candidate Profile

We invite applications from candidates who have completed a PhD in plant biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, or a closely related field. Proficient written and oral English skills, along with substantial experience in (plant) molecular genetics, microscopy, and cell biology, are essential. Previous experience with model grass species, (plant) signaling, protein biochemistry, or single-cell/spatial transcriptomics will be advantageous. We seek an individual with an open and collaborative mindset to thrive within our research unit.

Project Overview

This project is funded by the SNSF and the DFG within the framework of the CSCS research unit. In grass leaves, stomatal rows consistently develop adjacent to leaf veins, indicating the importance of this spatial coordination for regulating water supply and demand. However, we are still exploring how the development of veins and stomata is spatially coordinated. This project aims to utilize spatial genomics, imaging, genetics, and biochemistry to uncover the mechanisms behind the robust placement of stomatal rows next to leaf veins.
