Postdoctoral Researcher in Membrane Separations

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Membrane and Interfacial Science Lab, part of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at ETH Zürich, is at the forefront of designing materials and processes aimed at more energy-efficient and sustainable separation methods. Our research focuses on membrane technologies that could significantly enhance carbon capture, gas separations, and water purification. Our team works comprehensively on membrane synthesis, experimental characterization, and transport modeling.

Job Description

The postdoctoral researcher will lead and develop research initiatives on next-generation membrane processes. Key responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting experimental evaluations of membrane performance in gas and liquid separations (e.g., carbon capture, methane purification, water treatment)
  • Fabricating and characterizing nanoporous and polymeric materials
  • Engaging in theoretical and computational modeling of transport and energy efficiency
  • Supervising and mentoring doctoral and master's students
  • Preparing scientific manuscripts and contributing to research proposals

The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate closely with Prof. Anthony Straub to fulfill these responsibilities, with opportunities to engage with industrial partners and national research initiatives such as NCCR Separations.

Profile

  • A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in membrane science, material fabrication, or transport modeling
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international research team
