About the Project

We are seeking a fully-funded Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Bern to contribute to a groundbreaking project focused on the atmospheres of transiting sub-Neptunes. This role involves working on the SNSF-funded "Exo-Neptune Census," a pioneering research initiative led by Assistant Professor Hugh Osborn. The project aims to perform a population-level analysis of sub-Neptune radii, masses, and atmospheres, thereby enhancing our understanding of their formation, composition, and evolution.

The fellow will specifically focus on extracting atmospheric volatile abundances and bulk planetary volatile compositions from JWST observations of sub-Neptunes. The Exo-Neptune Census is designed to span five years and will also engage PhD students in detecting new Neptune-like exoplanets and characterizing them using both space-based and ground-based observatories such as CHEOPS and HARPS.

Collaborations with PD Dr. Daniel Kitzmann, Prof. Brice-Olivier Demory, and their respective research groups at Bern provide essential expertise in atmospheric observations and retrievals. Additionally, Prof. Yann Alibert and Prof. Christoph Mordasini offer valuable insights into theoretical modeling. The successful PostDoc will have the opportunity to work closely with these teams.

Your Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Expertise in applying Bayesian statistical methods to astronomical datasets
  • Experience in modeling exoplanetary transits
  • In-depth knowledge of atmospheric physics (including chemistry and radiative transfer)
  • A proven track record as an independent researcher
  • Experience in extracting spectra from JWST timeseries data
  • Familiarity with abundance retrieval techniques
  • Theoretical expertise connecting sub-Neptune interiors and atmospheres is an advantage

The fellow is expected to play an integral role in the IN/AT-SYNC JWST large program, which targets the atmospheres of sub-Neptunes in resonant systems, and to assist in acquiring additional JWST transmission spectra.

The PostDoc will contribute to project goals while also enjoying protected time for independent research. Generous travel funding for international conferences and research visits will be available. PostDocs will also contribute to teaching at the University of Bern and may supervise Master's projects while mentoring existing PhD students.
