Postdoctoral Researcher in Endoscopic Video Enhancement / Postdoctoral Researcheress in Endoscopic Video Enhancement

ETH Zurich - July 15, 2025

Postdoctoral Researcher in the Area of Endoscopic Video Enhancement

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The enhancement of endoscopic videos is a complex yet vital task in various clinical interventions, where imaging clarity is essential for procedural success. Due to challenging imaging conditions, the quality of endoscopic videos can often be compromised by various artifacts. This project aims to develop the next generation of enhancement algorithms tailored specifically for endoscopic videos, focusing on applications in real-time interventions. Development efforts will prioritize enhancement quality and computational efficiency, particularly regarding latency.

Project Background

The successful candidate will join the Biomedical Image Computing (BMIC) team at ETH Zurich and will collaborate with the Computer Vision Lab (CVL). The project is conducted in partnership with an industrial implementation team, which will provide support for hardware and software integration.

Job Description

The position encompasses responsibilities across three primary domains: (1) research, (2) teaching, and (3) supervision.

  • Research: The researcher is expected to conduct cutting-edge research on the analysis and enhancement of endoscopic videos. This entails the development of new algorithms and methods, alongside the software implementation of those developments. Maintaining open communication and fostering collaboration with project partners is essential, as well as completing the project deliverables.
  • Teaching: The researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to courses offered by the BMIC group, including Image Analysis and Computer Vision and Medical Image Analysis. Teaching is optional and not mandatory for the position.
  • Supervision: The researcher will be expected to assist in supervising semester and master thesis projects for master's degree students within the department.

Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline;
  • Experience in the analysis of endoscopic video data;
  • Expertise in image and/or video enhancement algorithms;
  • A strong interest in the development of real-time, low-latency algorithms;
  • A minimum of two first-author publications in top-tier venues such as IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis, MICCAI, IPMI, CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, or ICML;
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills in English.

Workplace

The work will take place in a stimulating environment as part of a multicultural research team that values collaboration and innovation.
